Indore. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set a target of eradicating sickle cell anemia by the year 2047. Most of the sickle cell patients are in Madhya Pradesh. The number of patients is increasing every year in the state because screening is being done in large numbers. Odisha is at second place. Barwani district has the highest number of patients in the state.
Recently, the state had the highest number of sickle cell anemia tests in the country, 1.3 crore people, out of which 28128 patients were found. The highest number of patients in the test was 3662 from Barwani district. This test was conducted by the Governor. Finding such a large number of patients is a matter of concern.
Sickle cell patients are in tribal areas. Treatment of a person suffering from this disease is very difficult. Many people have lost their lives due to this disease. Children’s lives are in danger due to continuous blood loss and other diseases caused by it. There is still a need for awareness in the state.
If both parents have sickle cell disease, then their children are more likely to have sickle cell. Therefore, it should be tested before marriage. Currently, 1400 patients suffering from sickle cell anemia are registered in Indore’s MY Hospital, who are being provided treatment facilities.
Checking whether the newborn has sickle cell in the womb
In the only government MY hospital of the state, it is being checked whether the newborn has sickle cell in the womb or not. A molecular lab has been established here for this. In this, the fetus is being tested from the womb of the woman. This lab is only in selected medical colleges of the country. Modern facilities will be provided to children suffering from sickle cell in the hospital. Along with this, bone marrow transplant is also being done to the patients.
27 districts of the state are in sickle cell zone
Let us tell you that the prevalence of symptoms in the tribal population in India is about 10 percent and the prevalence of the disease is one percent. 27 out of 45 districts of Madhya Pradesh come in the sickle cell zone.
Let us tell you that in sickle cell anemia, the shape of red blood cells becomes crooked (like a sickle), due to which the victims start having many problems including anemia, joint pain. There is no cure for this disease. By avoiding marital relations between the carrier woman and man, the birth of a child suffering from this disease can be prevented.
Better treatment is being provided in MY
Sickle cell nodal officers Dr. Ramu Thakur and Dr. Sachin Sharma said that better treatment is being provided to sickle cell patients in MY Hospital. Screening is also being done by visiting tribal hostels in Indore. After confirmation of the patients, they are being monitored. Here, molecular labs are being used to find out in the womb itself whether the newborn has sickle cell or not.
